2017 Better Newspaper Contest

The new contest features 20 categories to recognize both newspapers and individual staff members!  Read all about the new categories.

Online Entry:

Entries in 17 of the 20 categories will be uploaded as full-page digital tearsheets in PDF format. Directions on how to upload your entries will be available in mid-November.  Three categories (News Content, Layout & Design, Advertising) each require three different issues be mailed to the OPA office.


There are nine (9) divisions. OPA Business Membership Newspapers, Divisions 1-8, are determined by newspaper circulation and frequency shown on the October 2016 U.S. Postal Service statement of total paid circulation (PS Form 3526, line 15C) plus the number of paid electronic subscriptions. 

  • Three divisions for Daily newspapers
  • Four divisions for Weekly newspapers
  • Semi-, Twin and Tri-Weekly Newspapers 
  • College Newspapers

Newspapers will be assigned to circulation divisions after Statements of Ownership are published in October. After the entry deadline a list of participating newspapers sorted by division will be emailed to publishers and posted on the OPA website. 

Contest Period:

The 2017 OPA Better Newspaper Contest period is from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017.

Entry Deadline:

Monday, February 12, 2018 – All entries must be submitted online by this date. Entry materials that must be mailed to the OPA office for the News Content, Layout & Design and Advertising categories should also be postmarked by this date.

Entry Fee:

$10 per entry
