Dear NIE Friends:
The Texas Press Association and the Texas Newspaper In Education group will sponsor a conference at Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas April 15-17, 2009. Mark your calendar now. This NIE conference will be coordinated by Al and Judy Wilson.
The conference theme will be: "Basic NIE: Back to the Future of NIE". A goal of this conference will be to make your position CRUCIAL at your newspaper, and to make you a HIGHLY VISIBLE and RESPECTED member of your educational community.
This conference will be dedicated to Diane Goold and Karen Alexander, diehard veteran NIE people. Elaine Riner of Kingsport, TN, has a goal of making the newspaper an indispensable part of the educational process. We will complement that goal.
NIE positions are being eliminated at an alarming rate. Besides being crucial and indispensable, this conference will be about job preservation. We want to THROTTLE UP your NIE program!!!
We will be putting the "N" and the "E" back in NIE. There WILL be newspapers at this conference, and you will be given ideas on how to use them exhaustively as an educational tool. You will leave this conference with dirty elbows. You may see the conference site at this link. www.thespeedwayclub.com
"E" is for Education and E-editions. We will Explore Everyday Educational Extrapolation with the Newspaper to Enhance the students' learning Experience. You will leave this conference in "shock" related to the educational potential of the electronic edition.
Since the conference begins on April 15th, we will be working with taxes and the IRS. The creativity of each participant will be taxed to develop Initiatives to Retain Sponsorships.
Registration fee: $155.00
Download the registration form in PDF format.
The conference will run from 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, to 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2009.
D/FW Marriott Hotel
Phone: 817-961-0800 (Tell them you are with the Newspaper In Education conference)
The primary hotel is the Dallas/Ft. Worth Marriott Hotel & Golf Club at Champions Circle which is 1.1 mile from The Speedway Club. (FREE shuttle to/from The Speedway Club)
The rate is $99.00 + taxes. You figure about $115.00 per night. Not too bad if you can share a room. The catch to getting this special rate at this great hotel, is that reservations must be made TWO MONTHS OUT, or by February 14th. They conceded the $99 rate after some tough negotiating, but our concession was two months out instead of one month.
Rooms may be available after February 14th, but no guarantee. Check with the hotel for the rate. There are several hotels within five miles of the racetrack, on or near Interstate 35W. I will supply information on other nearby hotels at your request.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
