Walter Joe Hancock, longtime publisher of the Hobart Democrat-Chief, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, in Hobart. He was 85.
Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the First United Methodist Church at 201 S. Washington St. in Hobart, Okla.
After graduating from Hobart High School in 1947, Joe attended the University of Oklahoma working in the backshop at The Oklahoma Daily the entire time he was a student. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in journalism.
After service, he returned to the Hobart Democrat-Chief as ad director and sports editor. After the death of his father, Ransom Hancock, in 1974, Joe became editor and publisher.
Joe served as OPA president in 1991 and received the Milt Phillips Award in 2006.
Survivors include his wife, Neville, and three children, Mollie Nagel, Todd R. Hancock and Walt J. Hancock.
