Dick Mayo, former newspaper publisher and columnist and part owner of the Sequoyah County Times, died Aug. 13, 2011. He was 81.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in the First Presbyterian Church, 120 South Oak Street, Sallisaw. Burial will be in Sallisaw City Cemetery, and arrangements are under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
Mayo was born Nov. 19, 1929, in Fort Smith, Ark. His parents, Wheeler and Florence Mayo, founded the Sequoyah County Times in 1932, where he worked through his school years. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1951.
Mayo had a number of occupations over the years, but was best known for his weekly newspaper columns that began in October 1976. The last was published April 7.
