James L. Pate, former publisher of The Madill Record, died Aug. 11, 2011, in Dallas, TX. He was 78. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15 at Watts Funeral Home in Madill, Okla.
Pate was a native of Madill, Okla. and the third generation to be involved in Oklahoma newspaper publishing. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1954.
Pate served as president of the Oklahoma Press Association in 1974-75, exactly 25 years after his father served as president of the association. He was president of the Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation two years later, then served as president of the National Newspaper Association in 1985-86.
He was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 1986. The next year, OPA awarded the H. Milt Phillips award to Pate for service to the newspaper community.
He is survived by wife, Maribeth, three children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
