News That's Fit To Print

Thursday, April 5, 2012
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  •  Meridian Convention Center
737 S. Meridian Ave., Oklahoma City
Provided through the Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation
Raymond and Mildred Fields Memorial Fund Educational Series

Reporters will get hands-on training in writing news with professor and former newspaper publisher Dr.Terry Clark. Writing starts with strong reporting, and Clark has trained journalists for decades in writing and reporting news stories. This workshop will prove that writing “hard news” shouldn’t be hard to do.

Writers will learn:

  • What’s the news - Learn to evaluate story ideas and find the hook for an article.
  • What’s the lead - Get readers to pay attention with techniques for strong leads. Reporters will get lots of practice with creating the right lead for the right story.
  • Covering meetings - News happens in meetings, from the city council to Neighborhood Watch. Attendees will learn what to look for and how to write the best meeting story.
  • Covering spot news - News writers may dream of being first on the scene to cover a disaster or other news event, but are they really prepared to cover spot news? Find out what needs to be done before writing the first word in a spot news story.
  • Story critiques - Attendees will get feedback on story ideas and polish their writing in an email critique of a completed exercise after the workshop. Clark will give positive and helpful reviews.
