Job Description: The Sequoyah County Times, a twice-weekly newspaper in the rolling hills of beautiful eastern Oklahoma, is seeking a news editor.
This job presents an opportunity to lead a newsroom of four people in covering a very wide variety of interesting new stories.
The successful candidate will understand how to present compelling local news both in print and online, and have strong writing, editing, and newsroom management skills. Must meet deadlines and have knowledge of AP style. Experience with InDesign, website updating and the ability to use social media a plus. The Times is published Wednesdays and Fridays and produces a variety of special sections throughout the year.
The Times is located in Sallisaw, county seat of Sequoyah County. Sallisaw's growing population is 8,500 and the county's population is over 42,000. Kerr Lake is seven miles to the south and Tenkiller Lake is 25 miles to the northwest. Fort Smith, Ark., with a population of over 80,000, is located 20 miles to the East.
The newspaper is family-owned for over 80 years, and has benefits including partially paid health insurance, matching retirement, and cell phone allowance. The Times is a consistent OPA Better Newspaper Contest prize winner.
