The Navasota Examiner is seeking an editor and publisher who can be a leader in both the newsroom and in the publisher’s chair.
The Examiner is an award-winning weekly newspaper in Grimes County, just minutes from Bryan-College Station in the Brazos Valley, with a staff of four. We cover it all – the oil and gas industry, county and city government, schools, cops and courts, civic events and community happenings. The requirements for this position are simple. We want someone with strong news judgment and an ability to work with employees of various degrees of experience. We want someone who can turn a dull press release into a journalistic gem; someone who is well versed in AP style; someone comfortable with interviewing everyone from the governor to the kindergarten class president; and someone handy with a camera or not afraid to learn. If you like to cover sports, that’s a plus since Navasota is home to the Class 4A state champion Rattlers football team. At least two years of management experience is necessary, including reviewing P&Ls, developing budgets and long-term planning.
The person we hire will also be responsible for managing the ad sales staff with planning promotions, monitoring sales efforts and developing ideas turn to non-advertisers into regular ones. The successful applicant will directly be responsible for the editorial product – from planning to production, and assume a bevy of other responsibilities, including managing ad sales, bookkeeping, distribution, analyzing monthly financials and planning for the future.
