DESCRIPTION: Oklahoma State University invites applications for the position of adviser for its award-winning student newspaper, The Daily O’Collegian.
This position works closely on a daily basis with the general manager, advertising director and other permanent staff to ensure the overall excellence, quality and tradition of the O’Collegian.  The adviser  counsels students on reporting, editing, headlines, photographs and illustrations, design, content planning, deadlines, quality controls, personnel and fiscal management, staff motivation, legal and ethical issues, staff recruitment, hiring, training and development, conflict resolution, and other technical and managerial functions. Duties include writing a daily teaching-tool critique of the student newspaper and its online edition. Duties also include advising on the general direction of the newspaper's online edition. The adviser sets technical standards for Internet publishing platforms hosting the newspaper’s Web site and its related services, trains faculty and students to create and publish content for the Web site, including text, graphics, audio and visual stories. The adviser researches trends in online media and offers guidance to the student staff for implementation. This position requires a willingness and ability to work irregular hours.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum master’s degree in communications, preferably in news editorial. Job requires minimum five years experience, or a combination thereof, in newspapers and Web site development and supervision. Must have solid print experience in reporting, writing, editing, photography, design and staff management. Adviser should have advanced knowledge of Internet publishing software and content management systems, including popular blogging systems. Adviser should also have excellent print/Web writing, Web editing, interface design and Web production skills. Any qualifications one might require of a “new media” or “convergence” adviser.
